Annapurna Base Camp Trekking Overview
The start of your ABC trek involves taking an early bus from Kathmandu to Pokhara or a flight from Kathmandu to Pokhara. You can reach Pokhara either way. Pokhara, known as the tourism hub of Nepal, is guaranteed to captivate you with its stunning beauty. The second day starts with a journey from Pokhara to Tikhedunga via Birethanti. The actual trekking begins from Tikhedhunga, where you follow a path that traverses rice fields alongside the Modi River until we reach our goal for the day, Ulleri.
On the following day, you will hike to Ghorepani, which is located at an elevation of 2,860 m / 9,385 ft. Ghorepani offers magnificent views of the Annapurna massifs, including Mt. Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, Tukuche, Dhampus, Nilgiri, Barash Sikhar, and Machhapuchre (Fishtail).
On the fourth day, you will have the opportunity to reach the renowned Poon Hill viewpoint. To fully maximize your experience at Poon Hill (3,210 m / 10,525ft), you will start your day by waking up at an early hour and embarking on a hike to Poon Hill. You get to witness the magnificent spectacle of the sun rising over more than 32 mountain ranges, including the Annapurna range, as well as Dhaulagiri and Nilgiri. On the next day, you will leave Annapurna Sanctuary and return along the same path through the Modi River Valley. You will reach a peaceful resting place called Bamboo, where you will spend the night. On the next day, you depart from Bamboo and hike to Jhinu Danda, which is situated at an elevation of 1,780 m / 6,393 ft. Jhinu Danda is home to natural hot springs that provide a tranquil environment for rejuvenating and relieving fatigue in your muscles.
Assuming all goes smoothly, you will depart from Jhinu Danda and proceed along the Modi Khola to arrive at Ghandruk Phedi (1,150 m / 3,770 ft) on the tenth day. From Ghandruk Phedi / Siwai you will drive back to Pokhara via Nayapul. Today marks the final day of your journey in the trekking zone.

How does each day look?
Day 1: Take a Drive / Flight From Kathmandu to Pokhara (820 m / 2,690 ft), west of the Kathmandu Valley
Pokhara is an exquisite valley renowned for its several lakes, such as Phewa and Begnas. It is nestled at the base of majestic mountains, including Annapurna (8,091m), Machapuchare (6,993m), Dhaulagiri (8,169m), Manaslu (8,156m), and Lamjung Himal (6,983m). Day 2: Drive From Pokhara to Nayapul /Birethanti /Tikhedhunga (1,570 m / 5150 ft). Trek to Ulleri (1,540 m / 5,050 ft).
Today, you take a short drive to Tikhedhunga. The road is gentle and passes through Nayapul before reaching Birethanti. During your journey, you will encounter breathtaking terraced fields lining the Bhurungdi Khola.
Following Birethanti, you go on an offroad journey that leads us to Tikhedunga. The walk starts at Tikhedhunga, passes through Sudame and Hile villages, and concludes at Ulleri, situated at an elevation of 2073 m / 6801 ft. The duration of your walk will be approximately three hours.
Day 3: Trek from Ulleri (1,540 m / 5,050 ft) to Ghorepani (2,860 m / 9,385 ft).
Your hike today will be thrilling as the trail gradually climbs upwards. From the trail, you may enjoy the panoramic views of the Annapurna, Machhapuchre, and Hiunchuli mountain ranges. While passing through the rhododendron forest, you can observe several untamed creatures, invigorating springs, and flowing rivers. Subsequently, the route takes you to Ghorepani, an awe-inspiring village situated on a prominent ridge.
From Ghorepani, you can witness awe-inspiring views of the Himalayas, providing heavenly views of prominent peaks like Dhaulagiri I, II, III, IV, V, Tukuche, Dhampus, Nilgiri, Annapurna South, Barah Sikhar, and Machhapuchhre (often known as Fishtail).
Day 4: Early morning hike to Poon Hill viewpoint (3,210 m / 10,525 ft), then trek to Tadapani (2,630 m / 8628 ft).
If you love sunrise, today is the perfect day for you. Today, you climb Poon Hill early morning to witness the sunrise over the Himalayas.
From Poon Hill, you can observe the sunrise illuminating over 32 Annapurna ranges, as well as the Dhaulagiri, Nilgiri, and Machhapuchre mountains. Today, you start your trek from Tadapani and proceed towards Chomrong (2,165 m / 7,105 ft), passing through Chuile en route. Initially, you pass through the scenic Ghandruk Village and subsequently descend sharply into the Kimron River before arriving at Chomrong. By following this route, you will be able to witness stunning panoramas of Annapurna South and Fishtail Mountains.
Chomrong village is situated at the base of the Annapurna range and is a well-liked resting place for trekkers on their way to Annapurna Base Camp.
Day 6: Trek from Chomrong (2,165 m / 7104 ft)/ Sinuwa (2,340 m / 7677 ft) to Himalaya (2,890 m / 9481 ft) / Deurali (3,174 m / 10413 ft).
Your duration of today's hike will be extended. From Chomrong, the hike descends to Chomrong Khola on a steep stone road and then ascends through bamboo, oak, and rhododendron forests to reach Sinuwa (2,340 m / 7677 ft).
The trail offers breathtaking views of the Machhapuchre and Annapurna snowcaps. The route passes by Khuldigar village, then dips towards the villages of Bamboo Lodge, before ascending to the Himalayas at an elevation of 2,890 m / 9,425 ft.
Day 7: Trek from Himalaya (2,890 m / 9481 ft) / Deurali (3,174 m / 10413 ft) to ABC (4,130 m / 13,550 ft) by Machhapuchhare Base Camp.
After spending the previous night in the Himalayas, you will pass through the Modi Khola Glacier Valley. You will walk through a prominent rock formation called Hinku Cave, as well as pass by the accommodations at Deurali, before reaching the entrance to the Annapurna Sanctuary, which leads you to ABC.
As you walk through, you will be near the Annapurna glaciers. During your journey, the Machhapuchhre Base Camp provides you with breathtaking mountain views of the nearby mountains.

After exploring ABC, it is time to climb down. You will hike down a path that takes you out of the Annapurna Sanctuary and out of the Modi River Valley.
Eventually, you will reach your destination of the day, Bamboo (2,350 m / 7,700 ft).
Day 9: Trek from Bamboo (2,350 m / 7,700 ft) to Jhinu Danda (1,780 m / 6,393 ft) and nearby natural hot springs.
Following a long hike from ABC to Bamboo yesterday, you will proceed towards Jhinu Danda today. You will follow a route that leads to Kimrong Khola and subsequently ascends through the tranquil rhododendron, bamboo, and oak forests, until arriving at Jhinu Danda.
Jhinu Danda is a popular destination known for its tranquil natural hot springs, which draw in numerous people each year. It offers a rejuvenating experience, allowing trekkers to unwind and relieve fatigue in their muscles.
Day 10: Trek from Jhinu Danda (1,780 m / 6,393 ft) to Siwai / Ghandruk Phedi (1,150 m / 3,770 ft) and drive to Pokhara (820m) by Nayapul.
Today is the last day of your trek. Upon departing from Jhinu Danda, you proceed along the dusty road adjacent to the right side of Modi Khola.
After a 3-hour hike, you will arrive at Siwa / Ghandruk Phedi, where you will mark the end of your ABC trek and take a drive to Pokhara. You will stay in Pokhara overnight.
Day 11: Take a Drive or Flight from Pokhara (820 m / 2,690 ft) to Kathmandu (1,350 m / 4,450 ft).
This is the last day of your journey as you will reach Kathmandu- the exact place where the journey began.
How Difficult is Annapurna Base Camp Trek?
The ABC Trek is of moderate difficulty. The hike often lasts 6 to 7 hours each day, with several breaks to enjoy the breathtaking mountain scenery. The trek routes consist of ascents, descents, and linear pathways. Although, prior experience is beneficial for the ABC walk, but technical abilities are not required.
This journey can be completed by trekkers capable of hiking for 6 to 7 hours with a light day pack. You need to be in good physical condition because trekking at higher altitudes is physically challenging.

When is the Best Time to Trek To Annapurna Base Camp?
There are two best seasons for the Annapurna Base Camp trek – The spring season (March, April, and May) and the Autumn season (September, October, and November).
In the Spring season, the weather is warm during the day and cold at night. You can witness green foresters, and rhododendrons bloom throughout the trail. However, it can be crowded during this time.

What are the Permits Required for the Annapurna Base Camp Trek?
You need 2 permits to trek Annapurna Base Camp - Trekkers Information Management System (TIMS) and Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP).
TIMS card is for the safety of the trekkers and visitors. TIMS card can be obtained from TAAN Secretariat in Maligaun, TAAN TIMS Counter in Saatghumti, Thamel, and TAAN Pokhara Secretariat in Pokhara.
Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) is another permit required in the entire Annapurna region. ACAP permits can be obtained in the Tourism Board of Nepal and also in Pokhara.

When packing for the Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) trek, it is important to strike a balance between packing light and being fully prepared for the diverse weather conditions and terrain you’ll encounter.

Food and Accommodations on ABC Trek
The menu items in trek regions include - local, Asian, and Western cuisine, but as you go up, the menu gets shorter and shorter. However, popular food in most of the trekking regions is dal (lentils), bhat (rice), and tarkari (curry). This food is highly nutritious and is very popular among the Nepali community.
You can have western cuisines like pizzas, pasta, and spaghetti, popular Nepali food momo and thukpa along the trail for lunch or dinner.
You will have several options for breakfast as well. The most popular ones are Tibetan bread, pancakes, toast or chapati with hash brown potatoes, a boiled or omelet egg, and a hot beverage (tea or coffee).
Though plenty of non-veg items will be available in the trekking regions, it’s better to avoid such food items for hygiene concerns. There is no option for a refrigerator in the teahouses as you climb up. It is better to avoid dairy items, cheese items, alcoholic drinks, caffeinated items, and hot chocolates.
You can find various cozy accommodations available along the trail, such as tea houses, mountain lodges, and homestays, specifically designed to meet the requirements of trekkers.
Accommodation will not be a challenge at the Annapurna Base Camp Trek. Nevertheless, during the peak season, you will need to make prior bookings. However, during the peak trekking season, trekkers may sometimes be required to spend the night in the dining hall due to a lack of available rooms.
Electricity and Water
Solar-powered electricity is used in every teahouse at high altitudes. You can recharge your electronic devices from these tea houses by paying a small fee. While the private rooms do not have charging ports, a charging station will be available in the common area for charging your phones, camera batteries, power banks, torches, and other equipment.
Kindly consider the needs of other users when utilizing the charging station, since it is intended to accommodate all of the gadgets belonging to the trekkers staying at that specific teahouse.
Similarly, you can easily buy packed mineral water from en-route shops however, it will cost you expensive. It is better to bring a reusable water bottle and fill it whenever you need. You will find taps, wells, and rivers in the trek region, do not drink from them. Make sure to use water purification tablets before you drink.
Communication and Internet Service
During the Annapurna Base Camp Trek, there are several points where you may come across mobile phone coverage offered by Nepalese telecom service providers like NCELL and NTC.
However, as you hike and reach higher elevations the mobile network coverage may be restricted in some segments of the route.
Some of the lodges/teahouses in the trek regions have internet facilities however, you have to pay a small fee for the service.
You cannot entirely depend on the free WiFi that certain tea houses provide to trekkers, especially those at higher elevations. In general, WiFi coverage is very poor and constrained as you hike higher.
